Knotweed spraying programme — how it works here

Knotweed spraying programme in St Helens

Spraying is the practical choice for most gardens. It is done through the growing season and repeated for three to five years until nothing returns, then monitored. It costs less and causes less upheaval than digging, unless a sale or building start forces the pace.

How a spraying programme works in practice

Treatment is timed for late summer and early autumn, when the plant is moving nutrients down into the rhizome and carries the herbicide with it. The next spring the stand is weaker, with fewer and smaller canes, and the cycle repeats. Most gardens see steady shrinking over three seasons.

Rain soon after spraying can wash product off, and wind risks drift onto plants you want to keep. Near the Sankey canal or a brook, only products approved for use by water are suitable, and some sites need permission first. Your operative should explain what applies to your garden.

Success is judged by two clear seasons with no regrowth, not by a bare patch in July. We log every visit with photographs, and the record is what a lender or buyer will ask for. If shoots come back, we treat them and adjust the programme.

Questions about knotweed spraying programme

Is the garden out of bounds meanwhile?
Only the treated patch, and only for the time the product label gives for children and pets.
How do I know if it is Japanese knotweed?
Look at the stem first. It is hollow like bamboo, spotted with purple, and kinks in a zig-zag at each node. Leaves are shaped like shields with a flat base, and creamy flower clusters appear in late summer. Dead brown canes can remain upright all winter. A photo sent to us is faster than matching pictures online.
Is it illegal to have knotweed in my garden?
Having it on your land is not a crime. The offence is letting it spread into the wild, and any soil or cuttings are treated as controlled waste. If it crosses into a neighbour's property they may have grounds for a claim against you.
Will knotweed stop me getting a mortgage?
Not by itself. Many lenders will proceed when there is a professional survey, a treatment plan and an insurance-backed guarantee that can transfer to the buyer.
How long does treatment take?
A spraying programme normally lasts three to five growing seasons, followed by monitoring. Excavation takes a few days but costs noticeably more.
Can I just dig it out myself?
We advise against it. Tiny pieces of rhizome regrow, and the soil cannot go in the household bin or to the council tip.
